Make New Friends but Keep Discord - A Corpulent Analysis

M: Hey Corpulent Brony, have you heard the news?
CB: What news?  Did something happen?
M: I can’t believe you haven’t heard, you can’t escape it!
CB: What are you talking about?!
M: NOTHING CAN STOP...THE SMOOZE!!!
CB: I love the Smooze!  Nothing else can top our unstoppable Smooze!
M: I always liked the Smooze, ever since I saw him in the original movie.  I loved how he was purple and had lots of googly eyes, so I was sad that this one was green and didn’t have any eyes.  But I did like how he had a top hat and a bow tie.
CB: Oh?  I have a bow tie too!  Is that why you like me~?
M: Huh?  Yeah, yeah, sure, whatever, that’s the reason.  Anyway, do you think they’ll make the Smooze into a toy?!
CB: Of course not!  When have you ever seen our Hasbro overlords take advantage of their intellectual property for that sweet, cold, hard cash?  Don’t be silly!  In any event, I believe this episode proved my prediction about the Smooze to be true: He wasn’t a central part of the episode, and I doubt he’ll return (at least not this season).  He was a minor character that provided a bit of comic relief.  He wasn’t even inherently evil, he ate the shiny things because he liked the way they tasted.  In fact, in the end he gave them all up willingly.
M: Well, when you put it that way, perhaps the Smooze was a metaphor for bulimia?  In any event, he looked like a green booger.
CB: Speaking of new characters, I didn’t like Tree Hugger for some reason.  Did you get the vibe that she and Fluttershy were flirting?  I mean, if Flutters is a tree it stands to reason Tree Hugger wants to...uhhh, hug her, right?
M: You’re crazy!  I think Fluttershy was just excited to be making a new friend that shared a common interest.  It’s like being a biologist, I can talk to most ponies about their pets, but when I’m with another biologist we can have much more in-depth conversation, talking about field studies and more than just animal husbandry.
CB: I suppose that makes sense.  But I hate the name Tree Hugger and her portrayal as some dope-smoking, dreadlocked hippy.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I’m sure the grass in Ponyland is as dank as a witch’s brew.  But, still, the character felt out of place for me in this world.
M: I liked that she was green and her hair was cool.  I’m not sure we’d get along well in real life, but overall she seemed okay.  Through her Discord learned an important lesson immortalized in the words of this song I learned in Girl Scouts, “make new friends but keep the old.”  In fact, I believe it was referenced in the title of this episode, “Make New Friends but Keep Discord.”
CB: Ohh, good reference!  I didn’t even notice that.
M: Well, you should’ve paid more attention in Girl Scouts!
CB: I suppose this is something most kids learn at a very young age, that you can have many friends but it doesn’t mean you like any of them less.  Jealousy is an ugly, green monster as demonstrated in this episode, especially if you’re a transdimensional draconequus.  Hey, I wonder if that’s why they made the Smooze green?  Is it a personification of Discord’s jealousy perhaps?
M: Ohhh, that’s good.
CB: So, to what dimension do you think Discord was going to send Tree Hugger?  Some strange universe inhabited by sock puppets?  After the final Equestria Girls movie, will we have to suffer a My Little Pony Equestria Socks movie trilogy?
M: Oh, I wish I lived in sock puppet world.
CB: Well, who doesn’t?  I’m disappointed Twiley didn’t seem to remember her lesson from the last Gala that Celestia hates these boring things and she would totally invite somepony like Discord to liven things up.
M: Twilight Sparkle never seems to learn… I did find it interesting that Celestia acted much as she was portrayed in the recently published Princess Celestia and the Summer of Royal Waves book by GM Berrow that you made me read.  She was all about fun and frivolity and obviously tired by all the strains of running Equestria.  It almost seems like maybe she wants to retire.   
CB: If she retires, who takes over?
M: Luna could.  I mean, she’s already had a thousand year vacation.
CB: Well there you have it folks, Marefriend confirms Celestia will be retiring and Luna will be taking over!  Thanks so much for taking the time to analyze this episode with me today.
